Madeira, Portugal - Renting a Car in Madeira

If you plan to explore and visit many places in Madeira, then renting a car would be the best option. Though the highways are well-developed, you can expect many sections of the secondary roads outside of Funchal to be narrow, steep and winding. However, many of these secondary roads offer some of the best natural scenery on the island - there is also not much traffic! You can find several car rental companies represented at Madeira Airport and in Funchal including Avis, Hertz, Budget, Europcar and Atlas.

Madeira, Portugal - Getting Around Madeira by Taxi

Many taxi drivers in Madeira speak English, though best you have the name of the destination written or a map to show the driver in case he does not understand you well enough. Taxis are readily available at Madeira Airport, Funchal (plenty across the tourist office at Avenida Arriaga) and the major tourist spots, but often hard to find in the more distant locations. Some taxi companies offer tours around the island with the driver acting as a guide - cost in the range of €60 for a half day and €100 for a full day tour.

Madeira, Portugal - Getting Around Madeira by Bus

There are several travel agencies in Madeira offering bus excursions around the island, but local buses (operated by a number of companies) are another option for a fraction of the cost. However, services to the more distant locations are not as frequent and sometimes there is only one service a day. Single fares are based on distance and cost between €1.15 and €4.10 - best to purchase a 7-day pass for unlimited travel on the Funchal routes for €22. Purchase the bus tickets from participating newsstands in Funchal.
