Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and situated along the Mediterranean coast, in the northeastern corner of Spain. It is Spain's second largest city and the largest in Catalonia, home to 1.6 million people (2011) and a metropolitan population of over 5 million. Barcelona is a beautiful city known for its historical buildings, modern architecture, hidden squares, outdoor markets and a long beachfront. The heart or centre of Barcelona is around the oldest part of the city known as Ciutat Vella (Old City).
