Before bridges were built across the Tagus River, the only way to get between the left and right banks of the river was to take the ferry boats. The boats are still there, taking commuters living in the suburbs on a 15-minute trip across the river to work in Lisbon. For visitors, the boats offer an opportunity for a scenic view of Lisbon from the Tagus River and visiting the suburbs. Most boats leave from Cais de Alfandega and Cais do Sodre in Lisbon and head to Cacilhas, Seixal, Montijo, Porto Brandao and Trafaria across the river.
