Lisbon, Portugal - Getting Around Lisbon by Tram

Lisbon's electric tramway network known as Rede de electricos de Lisboa in Portuguese began in 1901. There were 27 tram lines in 1957, but expansion of the metro and bus network has seen the number of tram lines reduced to nine. Currently the trams operate in the older parts of Lisbon (southern and western parts of the city) where the hills are steep and streets narrow - trams are more suited here. The trams have become a popular tourist attraction, passing through some of the historical parts of Lisbon.
