The warm ocean currents of the Gulf Stream and Canary Current have a strong influence on Madeira's climate. Temperatures from May to October are around 25°C (77°F) but scorching temperatures above 30°C (86°F) are not uncommon. December to April is never cold on the island of Madeira, with midday temperatures around 19°C (66°F) and night temperatures seldom falling below 10°C (50°F). Nearly half of the island is mountainous (above 700 metres or 2,300 feet), which features a cooler micro-climate.
