Gran Canaria is the third largest and second most populous of the seven Canary Islands. This Spanish island is about 200 km (124 miles) off the northwestern coast of Africa and 1,400 km (870 miles) from the Spanish mainland. Las Palmas (located in the northeastern corner of the island) is the capital and largest city in Gran Canaria. As a travel destination, the island receives more than 2 million travellers each year offering visitors it's sandy beaches, picturesque mountains, nature reserves and scenic villages.
